Many hundreds of years ago, Patanjali scripted the yoga sutras. The sutras are tenets - simplified phrases describing a philosophy and way of life conducive to a clear and unburdened mind, a mind open to happiness and enlightenment.
The text being referenced here is that of Swami Satchidananda, the founder of Integral Yoga.
Atha yoganusasanam
"Now the exposition of Yoga is being made."
Now... and now... and now... and so on. Doing, beginning, expressing, practicing - all moments of yoga are equally valuable - every moment is new. The expectations we usually experience off the mat, of ourselves and of others and of what occurs generally, are reconfigured on the mat. There is no rushing, no cheating, no aggression, no competition. No perfection as we normally strive for it. And while each moment is equally giving of potential, every moment is different in expression - the body experiences different things each day, and the 'exposition' it makes of yoga will change each day - what the mind allows the body to do each day will also change. 08/24/08
Yogas citta vrtti nirodhah.
"The restraint of the modifications of the mind- stuff is Yoga."
The mind has the tendency to always be moving, from one thought to another, from one judgement to another. Maintaining and developing a single thought or point of focus can be very challenging. The tools of pranayama practice - observing and retaining the breath - or of asana practice - staying in a pose for longer than we think is initially possible, aid in taming unruly thoughts. The distractedness of the mind can be lassoed.
