Almost 15 years ago, in the middle of my college career, I followed a friend to the Sivananda Yoga Center in New York City. I will always remember my teachers there - Ganesha who told each and every student that each and every one of our poses was beautiful; Gauri Devi who never gave us a chance to slack off; and Swami Sadasivananda, who always said that our practice was strong, no matter the day or asana.
Ten years later, after being closeted in believing that the wonder and bliss of Sivananda yoga was the ONLY yoga, I accidentally found my way to Yoga Sutra in New York, and David Hollander's Vinyasa classes - always challenging, always up-beat, up-lifting, engaging and enabling, they were addictive!
After teaching friends for years, at school, at home, and at work, I decided it was time to 'certify' myself. Not quite certain as to the differences of the various teacher training programs, I chose one based on the calming touch and meditative quality of one of my favorite teachers, Kristin Leal at New York Yoga. Every one of her classes blends perfectly into an effort infused seamless 1.5hr meditation - and her assists are transporting!
I try to bring together all of my learning experiences to your learning experience. All Flying Lotus Yoga classes are individualized, challenging, and appropriate to your level, and your day.
Beginner's level (1.5hrs) - If you are making the step onto a yoga mat for the first time, or if you have had 10 or fewer classes, this is the right class for you! Learn the basic poses, start thinking about alignment and the breath.
Restorative (1.5hrs) - Had a tiring week, long day, spent too much time on your feet, not enough time for yourself? Come in for a surrendering, relaxing class, to release yourself from your day.
Kid's and Teen Classes (45-60min) - For ages 4-7, we sing our Sun Salutations, play yoga games, take yoga adventures and do lots and lots of group poses! Ages 8-12, we still do group and partner poses, but branch out to more challenging asanas and breathing techniques. For teens, classes are slightly longer and a bit more challenging, while tempered for all levels - it can be a place to start a practice or form the bridge to adult open-level classes. Join us!
Vinyasa Flow, Open Level (1.5hrs) - A mixed-level class, for the student who has already begun a practice. Suggested for advanced beginner and intermediate students. Advanced variations are also given.
Partner classes (1.5hrs) - Bring a friend or partner or teen, and join us for an all-levels Vinyasa flow partner class! A combination of individual and partner asanas, it is a lovely way to have fun and find each other's balance :)
Meditation/Qigong (1.5hr) - A wonderful and intense combination of asana practice, pranayama, and meditation - beginners are very welcome!
