Beginning a yoga practice

Every day is different. Each side of the body is different - each side interacting with the world in different ways from the things we do every day. Every time you step on a yoga mat, something will be different. The trick is calming the mind to identify any subtle change in the body, or maybe calming the body to watch for subtle changes in the mind.

If I said that yoga was all about stretching the muscles and focus on the physical result, it would be untrue. If I said yoga is only about the mind, and isolating ones thoughts from everything around us, that would also be untrue. The eight limbs of yoga comprise

Balance, strength, flexibility, stability, resilience. Many teachers will say that giving yourself moments of yoga as often as you can, gives you the mental space to return to, no matter whether there is a mat beneath you. Listen to them! (us!) I think this is part of the reason some people find yoga addictive - because it stays with you, and you feel the positive change immediately. We all have our reasons for coming to yoga, for the first time, the second, or hundredth time - a yoga practice, of an hour and a half, or even five minutes, is still very much a practice! It is a moment you give yourself, a moment of renewed intention to be calm and centered. Rejoice in it!

What is Yoga?

Yoga can be many things to many people. It is a way of calming the mind, becoming more resilient to external changes and internal fluctuations, a way to encourage strength, flexibility and balance to the body, a way to restore energy to a depleted mind or body... It is a tool that allows the simultaneous and complementary study of the subtle changes in the body using the mind - and a way of observing the daily subtle changes in the mind by centering the focus using the breath, and watching for correlations between tightness of a particular part of the body, with tightness or strain in a particular part of the mind/emotions. It has so many facets, and thus serves so many human facets.
